Every fire truck is staffed with a captain, driver and ideally, two firefighters. The helmets are color coded for easy identification. Yellow helmets identify captains, and red helmets are for drivers and firefighters. The Fire Department has several levels of chiefs, who all wear white helmets.

The Corpus Christi Fire Department's Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible for enforcing local fires codes and investigating all fires. The Fire Marshal has nine inspectors, two inspector/investigators, and one civilian management aide. The primary job of the inspector is to ensure that fire and life safety codes are obeyed. These codes apply to a wide variety of buildings, including, but not limited to, restaurants, apartments, hospitals, nursing homes, schools, day care centers, shopping centers, night clubs, auto repair shops, churches, high rise buildings, and any building where large groups of people might gather. The primary job of the investigator is to sift through the aftermath of a fire and determine what was the cause of the fire, where did it originate, when did it start, how did it start (arson?) and if it was arson, who started it? If arson is proven, the investigator's job is to develop a case and present it to the district attorney. Arson investigators are state certified peace officers.

The Fire Department's Training Division is responsible for the continuing education of firefighters, training new recruits and conducting "media and citizen fire academies." The training division is comprised of a district chief, five captains and two firefighters.

The Fire Department is actively involved with the community. The Fire Department will perform free home safety inspections upon request. The Public Education Officer and Fire Prevention Inspectors give free fire safety presentations for citizens, schools and organizations. Some fire stations crews participate in a reading program with the local elementary schools. Local Firefighter Association 936 and the Corpus Christi Fire Department participate with firefighters nationwide in the annual Muscular Dystrophy "Fill the Boot" Campaign. In 1999, local firefighters collected a total of $50,000 and added it to the national firefighters' collection total of $10,000,000 (Texas firefighters contributed 1/5, $2,000,000, of the national firefighters' total). Firefighters nationwide are one of the top five leading fund raising organizations for the National Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.
