Laguna Madre Wastewater Treatment Plant
The Laguna Madre Wastewater Treatment Plant is one of the two smaller plants and serves the Flour Bluff area of the City. The plant was constructed in 1971 and was expanded in 1986 to treat 3.0 million gallons per day (MGD).
The plant is currently treating about 1.3 MGD and is consistently meet 3 milligrams per liter (mg/l) BOD5 and 5 mg/l TSS even though the plant is permitted for 20 mg/l BOD5 and 20 mg/l TSS effluent limit. This plant won the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Excellence Award in 1995. Also the plant has won the Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies' Gold Awards for the past seven years.
The Laguna Madre plant, along with the Whitecap Wastewater Treatment Plant, is manned by a common staff of twelve. The supervisor has a Class B Wastewater Operator's Certificate. Plant operators are licensed with a Class B or Class C Wastewater Operator's Certificate. This facility operates under an authorized permit issued by Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
The plant is an activated sludge process plant and the sludge is stabilized aerobically. About 0.7 dry tons of sludge is removed from the system per day, on average.
